How Kiwis are coping with the new Health and Safety Act

Changes to health and safety (H&S) legislation came into effect from April this year. Chapman Tripp partner Garth Gallaway spoke to HRM TV about how employers have adapted to those changes.

“A lot of [employers] were concerned about the changes, because post Pike River, the changes were signalled a long time ago – so a lot of them have been taking steps in the last 24 months or so,” Gallaway said.

“Some have not taken steps and are finding themselves anxious and worried about the new penalties that have come in, and the new systems.  The advice we are giving to people is that if they have had good systems in place in the past, they have nothing to fear in the new legislation. It really does just codify what’s been in place in the past.”
