Chris specialises in corporate, emissions trading and regulatory law.

Chris advises clients on a range of issues including electricity sector regulation; climate change and emissions trading; companies and securities law; and mergers & acquisitions transactions. He has developed considerable experience and expertise in Electricity Governance Rule compliance, carbon forestry and emissions trading, NZX compliance and general companies and securities law.

Chris previously lived and studied in Japan for seven years as a recipient of a Monbusho Scholarship from the Japanese Government.

Recent experience

Chris has advised:

  • Transpower on Electricity Governance Rules and other electricity sector regulatory compliance issues, particularly the grid upgrade and investment rules
  • NZX on legal and regulatory issues relating to emissions trading in New Zealand, including through a central counterparty clearing house 
  • GreenAir Fund on carbon forestry activities and emissions trading in New Zealand 
  • the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga on the purchase of the Tongan electricity assets and business, including advising on the establishment of a new regulatory regime for the electricity sector 
  • AMP Capital Investors (New Zealand) on the restructuring of the AMP Capital Property Portfolio, a wholesale managed fund 
  • Ngati Porou Whanui Forests on a carbon forestry joint venture with a major overseas company 
  • Trans Tasman Properties in relation to the spin-off and listing on the London Stock Exchange of its Asian property investment vehicle, by way of share swap with Trans Tasman shareholders, and 
  • Trans Tasman Properties in relation to takeover offers by SEA Holdings Limited in 2004 and 2006.
