Matt specialises in intellectual property, competition law, regulatory issues and civil litigation. 

Matt advises on all aspects of intellectual property from protection through to infringement. He has represented vendors and customers in some of New Zealand’s largest technology disputes. Matt has appeared as counsel on corporate & commercial matters in the High Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

Matt is the author of New Zealand's leading anti-trust textbook, New Zealand Competition Law and Policy. He holds an honorary position at the University of Auckland's Faculty of Law where he teaches competition law.

Matt's experience includes:

  • providing advice to technology sector participants on pending patent law reform
  • advising Microsoft, Telecom and Television New Zealand on digital copyright issues associated with emerging technologies
  • acting for clients in the pharmaceutical, software, telecommunications, packaging and energy sectors on contentious patent matters
  • counsel for Microsoft in High Court, freezing injunction/copyright infringement proceedings arising out of international piracy investigations
  • counsel to New Zealand Post in interim injunction proceedings to prevent online brand-jacking by a rival directories business
  • counsel to the Australian Securities Exchange in data protection litigation prosecuted before the New Zealand High Court
  • counsel to receivers and other stakeholders in finance sector litigation and regulatory investigations
  • trade mark counsel to clients including Billabong, Energizer, Schick, Westpac, ACP Media, ANZCO, Reader’s Digest, UBS AG, Vector and ANZ
  • acting as counsel to participants across the economy in cartel matters, and 
  • representing local and multi-national clients on contentious matters arising out of bespoke software developments.
