Chapman Tripp tops three league tables for Q3

Chapman Tripp has acted on more M&A deals in 2018 than any other New Zealand law firm, according to latest league tables.

Chapman Tripp is the highest ranked New Zealand firm by international directories ThomsonReuters, Bloomberg, and Mergermarket for overall M&A deal count, with 26 deals recognised by ThomsonReuters.

Head of Chapman Tripp’s corporate group, Tim Tubman, says 2018 has been a great year for M&A deals in New Zealand.

“The total value of deals has more than doubled this year compared to last year from US$2.30b (Q1 to Q3 2017) to US$4.68b (Q1 to Q3 2018) and that’s because we’ve seen more large deals in the market,” he said.

Tubman said the firm has led on a number of key deals in the past quarter, including: First Gas Limited’s $260m acquisition of Contact Energy’s Rockgas LPG business, UK private equity firm Hg's $225m acquisition of businesses from Orion Health, the $421m sale of PGG Wrightson’s seeds business, and Direct Capital’s sale of Hiway Group.

“We expect M&A activity to remain healthy for the remainder of the year, with increased activity in the media and financial services sectors, in particular, on the horizon for 2019.”
