John specialises in commercial and civil dispute resolution with a focus on insurance, maritime law and resource management.

John has a broad commercial and public litigation background and has represented clients before tribunals and courts throughout New Zealand. He has strong insurance and maritime practices and advises national and international clients on commercial matters and significant disputes. John also specialises in advising clients on contentious environmental and planning issues (including within New Zealand's maritime environment).

John is recognised as a leading individual in Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2019. He is also recognised as a Band 1 lawyer in Chambers Asia Pacific 2019. He is a member of the Resource Management Law Association (RMLA), New Zealand Insurance Lawyers Association (NZILA) and is a committee member of the Maritime Law Association of Australasia and New Zealand (MLAANZ).

Recent experience

John has advised:

  • the Earthquake Commission (EQC), New Zealand’s statutory disaster insurer, on all aspects of EQC’s insurance since the late 1990s, including EQC’s multi-billion dollar response to the Canterbury earthquakes, and representing EQC in various High Court proceedings concerning insurance entitlements for natural disaster events

  • a number of domestic and international insurers on New Zealand’s insurance regulatory regime and particularly the introduction of the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Act

  • the Treasury on insurance and reinsurance aspects of the Crown's support and subsequent sale of AMI insurance following the Canterbury earthquakes

  • the New Zealand Government on insurance and maritime law aspects of the grounding of the cargo vessel MV RENA on the astrolabe reef near Tauranga in 2011

  • Public Trust on the response of its material damage and business interruption insurance to Public Trust’s losses arising out of the Canterbury earthquakes

  • Crown Health Financing Agency on the collective insurance arrangements for the District Health Boards

  • Transpower in the High Court in the judicial review of resource consents and certificates of compliance

  • several of New Zealand’s largest corporates on their comprehensive insurance programmes, including liability and property insurances reviews

  • international clients on the legal and regulatory environment relevant to oil and mineral exploration in New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone, and

  • Shell on various maritime and contractual disputes related to its oil and gas operations off the Taranaki coast.
